First Midterm Answer Keys

Here are the answers that I consider to be correct as of 8:09 AM on Wednesday morning.   It is possible that I have made logic errors when figuring out the answers or transcription errors while adding them to the blog so don't panic if you think there is a mistake. Mistakes will be corrected before the exams are graded by the computer.

BAC Procedure

The BAC will meet this afternoon at 4 PM to discuss any concerns raised by the students.  If you think that one of questions is worded in such a way that a student with a solid understanding of the material you can write out a note telling how an educated student could have come up with a different answer from the one I chose.  You can turn those forms in by placing them on the ledge outside of Dr. Dini's office in the basement.  Please do NOT send comments to BAC by email.  I will not look at these or pass them along to the BAC.  Hard copies only please.  I will pick them up at 3:30 PM.

  3. Why is 35(blue) answer changed? B was correct. Cats feed on mice more so if mice population increases, Cats will eat more mice and leave off the grackles. Therefore, grackle population will increase as the result of indirect effect.

  4. Dr. McGinley,
I agree with the student above about question 35 (blue). From what I read on the question I also understood that the answer would be B. So, Im confused with the consideration of it being D.

  5. Hi, let me try to clear up the confusion about Question 35 Blue, 38 Green.

In order to determine what how altering the population size of one species you need to consider how changing population sizes affect population growth not behavior.

Thus, increasing the size of mice on the campus would allow the population size of Cats to increase (more food for the cats). If there are more cats then there are the population size of the grackles will decrease (more cats eating grackles).

  7. Question 35 blue- "...the cats might provide a service because they WILL feed on mice and rats. Data SUGGESTS that the cats are also predators on grackles,..."

The way the question is worded makes it seem like the mice are the primary food source, with the grackles being an occasional food source or secondary food source. When looking at the question from this perspective, if the mice population increases then the grackle population will increase as the result of an indirect effect (answer B) because the cats now have a greater number of mice to feed on rather than the grackles.
